Nanyang Style Kopi (Coffee)

Singapore style coffee - a full bodied brew

Nanyang or Singapore style coffee is known locally as “kopi”. Traditionally made from coffee beans roasted with sugar and butter (or sometimes olive oil these days), then ground and brewed in a muslin sock-like strainer, kopi tends to be rather strong if served black unless it is tempered with sugar and milk. At local coffee shops (“kopitiam”), the beverage can be ordered a variety of ways depending on whether it’s hot or cold, with or without sugar and milk. To order like a pro, see the glossary here.

Kopi is now available in powder format from a number of brands, e.g. Nanyang Old Coffee and Killiney Kopitiam, and retains much of its aroma and full-bodiedness even as an instant version.
